| Some Answers to a few possible Questions: This page is under construction. Check for updates. 1) What color of eggs do the Jersey giants lay? Excellent layers of medium to dark brown eggs 2) What colors do we raise? Only blue, black, and splash colors. We do not have other large fowl breeds . 3) Can I pick up my birds in person to avoid Shipping/Handling/Box charges? Yes- we are 45 minutes north of Louisville, Kentucky or 1-2 hours south of Indianapolis, Indiana. Birds are shown by appointment only. 4) Can you ship to areas outside of the USA? Because of regulations I can only ship poultry and/or eggs within the United States. 5) What do you feed your Jersey Giants? I feed a 20% protein layer crumble, scratched grains, and some cracked corn 6) Do I need grit and oyster shells for my chickens? It is important to include grit for all birds as it helps in the digestion of food that the bird eats. The bird takes in the food & it is stored for a short time in the crop and then continues on down to the gizzard. It is here where the bits of granite rock (grit) help grind down the corn for better digestion. A laying hen needs additonal Calcium especially while in production & the oyster shells are a great source along with Limestone. 7) When I order newly hatched chicks can I get only 5 or 6? and are they sexed? One needs to order 15-18 chicks per order so that the chicks are warm enough during shipment. The chicks are straight run (unsexed) since I am not able to know the difference a this age. If you want a small order I would suggest getting unsexed started birds that are 4-5 weeks old or purchase birds that are sexed that are 8-12 weeks old. 8) What is cost is involved in getting started birds shipped to me? There is the cost of the actual bird depending on the color as seen in the PRICE LIST, there is a Handling cost of $20.00, and the cost of a Poultry Shipping Box . (The box cost is determined by the quantity & size of birds that you order.) The cost of the birds, handling, box fees are paid in full before shipping occurs. We will have to pay for the Express mail fees, COD fees up front at time of shipment. The receiver will pay the actual Express mail cost, COD , and money order fee. The post office will mail the postal money order to me. 9) Are the birds Show Quality? At Maria's Jersey Giants we have been striving towards Showable birds since 1976. Most of our birds have been exhibited at 4-H County Fairs and have done VERY well....See Here. Some of our birds have been exhibited at State Fairs. Back in 2002 our Blue Giant pullets received Grand Champion & Reserve Champion at the South Dakota State Fair. Also a Blue Jersey Giant pullet and blue jersey giant cockeral were purchased in May 2009 as chicks by Sher Jennings. The pullet took Champion in the American class & the Cockeral took Reserve champion in the American class at the 2009 Northwest Winter Classic in Stevenson, WA. Thanks Sher Jennings for sharing these wonderful winnings. In the spring of 2008 a Blue Jersey giant pullet hatched from eggs purchased from Maria's Jersey giants took Champion in the American class in an APA show in NC. . In order to grow up to be a nice looking bird it is important that you proper nourishment is provided for the birds to include scratch grains, 16-20% proteins, fresh grass, grit, oyster shells, & clean water for your birds at all times. A growing bird can not grow properly on low protein or just shell corn. 10) If I order hatching eggs what color of chicks will I get? You could get a mix of blues, black, and splash colors unless you are purchasing eggs from our splash hens x black ;roos.............this combination will produce 100% blues. 11) Do I need an incubator to hatch eggs? Yes you need either a good broody hen or a good quality incubator to hatch eggs out. Depending on if the incubator is still air (meaning no turbo fan) then the temperature is around 100.5 -101 degrees. If the incubator is circulated air (with a turbo fan) then the temperature is 99.5 to 100 degrees. Hatching eggs for sale does not mean they will be hatched when they get there. ( I once refunded a hatching egg order due to the individual not having had a broody hen or an incubator. They ended up buying some chicks or started birds as I remember) It takes 21 days to hatch out chicken eggs provided that the temperature is not to high & not too low. 12) How can chickens survive the trip when being mailed? We add either cantaloupe, apple slices, and/or cannd corn to our adult poultry shipments so they keep hydrated & well fed for the trip. With baby chicks we add boiled egg yolks & ripe cantaloupe pieces. Newly hatched chicks can survive without food & water up to 4 days as they feed off the yolk within their bodies. The extra food for the road provides extra nutrition for them. This is why upon arrival the chicks might have a little budged area on their necks. This is a full crop where food is temporarily stored until it goes through the digestive process. 13) Does it upset the birds to travel by mail and what kind of container are the birds shipped in from the post office? The birds are shipped in an airline approved hard cardboard Horizon poultry shipper with air holes & filteration cloth over the holes providing extra warmth and protection. Because the birds are slightly in the dark during transport, they appear rather calm very much like as if they were sleeping on the roost at home. Upon arrival we do recommend that the birds be kept separate from your other flock for up to 30 days. Before shipment we do give the birds vitamins & electrolytes and we recommend that once birds have been received that you continue them for up to five days . 14) WHY ARE THESE BIRDS SOOOO SPECIAL?????The birds are very sentimental to me since I took over my grandmothers flock back in 1976 after her passing away. Later , Golda Millers bloodline was incorporated into my grandmothers line. With the purchase of Golda Millers hatching eggs we have incorporated this bloodline into my grandmothers line. We continue to perfect the bloodline and strive to breed nicely laced Blue Jersey giants. CLICK HERE TO SEE A LETTER FROM GOLDA MILLER HERSELF. There is satisfaction seeing customers happy to see their kids succeed with 4-H projects! We are working on a 4-H win page now. is 15) WHY THE HIGH COST OF THESE BIRDS, CHICKS, OR EGGS??????...................................I have specialized in the Jersey giants since 1976 and the breed is rare plus the blues and splash Jersey giants can not be found at Hatcheries. We have devoted much time and commitment to the Jersey giant breed. There is a lot of electricity cost to run incubators, run brooders along with the cost to feed this beautiful flock. While it has taken 32 years to breed and perfect this bloodline.......many folks can purchase fresh fertile hatching eggs, baby chicks, started birds, and or;adults overnight from me without having 32 years into the project. WE STRIVE TO PRODUCE "QUALITY OVER QUANTITY". 16) Can I pay using a personal check for birds and/or eggs? Yes, up to 2 weeks will be allowed for the check to clear & then birds and/or egg will be shipped out. The fastest payment & quicker to ship method is next day mailing a US Postal Money order, bank wire, or using paypal. For further information on Jersey giants please visit the link below.
