| Maria's Jersey Giants for Eating, Laying , Showing, and Petting! It is always are goal to produce "Show Quality" . Picking out a show bird at a young age is an educated guess and we do not guarantee show quality. Ultimately it is the opinion of the judge that day and depends upon how many birds one is up against. We recommend that you come & see the birds in person if you are looking to buy show quality birds. It is suggested that you purchase baby chicks and or eggs and you select the best of what you feel is Show Potential. By doing this you can also grow the birds with show rations & also handle the birds daily getting them ready for shows. The Jersey giants make excellent choice for a family flock. The birds do well at area 4-H poultry shows and many are "Winning" in APA shows as reported by their owners!! We only sell our more showable quality birds to those that are showing because these are birds are what will be representing Maria's Jersey Giants. We also give discounts to 4-H er's upon receipt of 4-H enrollment in the poultry projects. Please note that while we strive to breed to the Standard of Perfection not every chick hatched will be of show quality. Common sense tells us that whether we are breeding cattle, horses, dogs, etc. this holds true. This is why you need to select the best birds to breed from and/or breed other birds that compliment a particular breeding. We do sucessfully line breed our birds! This is a familar set of genes in which we are familar with verses sometimes buying from other breeders might mean that you get something that you don't want and have to spend years to breed unwanted characteristics out.. While you might be gaining in one area you might loose quality in another area. Pet birds might have crown points missing and/or toe nails missing due to freezing weather conditions (these do heal perfect, but the birds loose points and will possibly loose a tip of a toe). A pet bird might have an imperfection to the leg due to past injury sustained when a cow has stepped on the legs of a bird. Often the leg heals with a bulge to the leg or slight imperfection. There are other faults that can be found in Jersey Giant and/or other breeds such as lighter eyes or white ear lobes. Lesser show quality birds might have pink under the foot verses yellow. Depending on the fault these birds might be bred to a more showable quality bird to produce desireable traits. We are open to discuss with you why a particular bird is being sold as pet verses show potential. All pet birds are able to get around just fine & will still provide eggs for the table so therefore I choose not to destroy them but to give them a chance of "life" to be a pet in somebody elses barnyard. Some things to think about .........If a person wants to buy a show quality cow,sheep, goat do you not sell them a cow because they do not have a show quality sire or because they wish to cross them with another breed to produce meat for the family? Once a person purchases pets and/or show quality Jersey Giants from me, I do not wish to control you and your breeding program. However I am willing to help mentor you while selecting breeding stock. On a different note if you were purchasing one of my Newfoundland dogs you would be required to fill out an application, I would get a vet reference, you would have to sign a contract with me agreeing to spay/neuter the pet, and if show/breeding you would have to obtain all OFA health clearances on the dog before breeding it. With the selling of Newfoundland dogs you have AKC registration papers and with Jersey Giants there are no papers. If you want to purchase Jersey Giants from me and and are reasonable to work with I will sell you birds. I do not require you to sell out your entire flock before the selling of birds to you such as a fellow requested in the State of California. This person scammed other folks including myself of well earned funds. Most people just want Jersey giants for laying eggs and that they want good natured pets for their families.They also like the size of these birds in their barnyard. When purchasing Maria's Jersey Giants you are agreeing that you will not be abusive to the animals, and if used for meat we ask that you do so in a humane way. You also agree not to fight the birds. Jersey Giants are not fighters but are rather social gentle giants and want to be around you! It is extremely rare that a Jersey Giant is aggressive. We also ask that you do not use my name "Maria's Jersey Giants" and/or my photos in the selling and/or advertising of your birds. It is OK to say where you got your birds if someone asks. Once birds are sold to you we can not be in control of the quality that is produced and/or the type of fertility on hatching eggs. There is a lot that goes into producing fertile hatchable eggs along with the safe packing and delivery of eggs. . Please send show updates for those that have purchased from us. We would like to post your winnings on our website with your permission. We welcome referrals as it is nice to hear that somebody visited a poultry show and saw my birds there and like them and asked where might get some quality Blue, Black, or Splash Jersey Giants. Thanks again! Many folks claim they have the Golda Miller lines. I have seen these birds & have owned these birds before and many of them were culled. When I acquired birds directly from Golda Miller these were "quality" birds. Keep in mind that whether you buy from me or somebodyelse not every bird produced or hatched is show potential. If you "want" what "I want" these birds will be priced twice as much as a "pet" bird. I will not sell my show potential birds at pet price. I also do not guarantee the birds to be of "show quality". This is merely an educated guess. We recommend that you pick up in person all show potential birds so you can see them for yourself. We do not take birds back to avoid the potential of disease nor do we send replacements unless the birds arrived dead upon arrival which would be an extremely rare case.
